The Honourable Prime Minister

Shri Narendra Modi Ji

New Delhi

Subject- To request awareness of soil regeneration

Respected Prime Minister,

“The drops of rain seep through the soil and spread a beautiful earthy smell that refreshes our minds. The rain falls on the trees, the crops, the grass, and the flowers and rejuvenates the world. The atmosphere feels so whimsical and magical with the cool rain, making the soil wet, and mother earth smile wide.

“The rain’s constant companion is destruction. Water fills the roads. Landslides crash our homes. It dulls the atmosphere. There is no earthy smell anymore and instead the rain flood the drains and all heaps the road with garbage. People are in despair and their lives are upside down because of the shower’s wrath, that is maybe directed at us humans, for our sins”

The sole reason behind the difference in the description of rain is soil extinction. Soil, the largest ecosystem on Earth is going extinct day by day. Why do you ask? The quality house of soil, the topsoil where 95 percent of the nutrients are present and needed by us is being destroyed by our own hands. Deforestation, converting our lands into concrete jungles, polluting the soil- all of these have led to soil extinction.

The topsoil needs to be preserved. The earth’s ability to filter water, absorb carbon, and feed people are all possible because of the presence of the topsoil. Without it the food we grow will probably be lower in vital nutrients. The number of microbes in a tiny bit of soil is equal to or maybe more than all the billions of lives on planet Earth. These microbes form the basis of our lives. Creating existential problems for them is equivalent to erasing our future existence.

If degradation of the topsoil continues at the rate as it is going now then very soon, that is within the next 60 years, the world could run out of topsoil and in turn be deprived of food. This will lead to starvation, and incurable diseases, and in the end, bring an inevitable end to all life forms. Being wary of such a frightening future it is high time to reconsider our actions and put more effort into soil regeneration. We still have time; let us take action before we run out.

Thus, it is my humble request to you respected Prime Minister to create awareness among the people and take measures to resurrect the soil. The most efficient and feasible action is afforestation. Planting more trees anchors the soil, preventing the topsoil from being washed away.

The trees help the rainwater seep in through the soil and increase the water table as well as provide minerals to the soil. This in turn will also help the most crucial environmental issue of the country- heavy floods. Providing shade from the canopy of the trees to the soil is the needed task of the hour. The soil is a living entity. Nurture it and it will nurture us. Along with the most pressing problems of our age, soil extinction deserves our special care. Special emphasis should be given to this topic because it can very well risk our future existence.

As the great Sadhguru has commented, “soil is wealth, a legacy that we have received from our previous generations and we have to pass it on as living soil for future generations.” Save soil and the whole world would get in order. It is a long time investment, no doubt, but the bearings are worth it. Bringing back our traditional farming methods is important for healthy soil. Chemicals and fertilizers have degraded the soil and decayed it. It is a source of soil pollution that must be stopped.

As the future generation of the country, I request you to take serious measures against such regulatory actions. To save us and to save the world we ought to save soil. Lend a hand to the Save Soil campaign by Sadhguru and help the people working tirelessly to secure our future. I thus, urge you to look into the matter and make the country aware of the impending threat to our lives. Help us and let’s make our soil alive again. Let’s make it happen.

Thanking you

Yours sincerely,
