How Can You Overcome Low Self-Esteem?

As human beings, we all have emotions. They manifest based on our personalities and, most importantly, our situations. We all know first-hand that unfavorable conditions can emotionally impact us. That is something we sometimes tend to avoid feeling.


Low self-esteem is an extremely powerful emotion that we feel. In all honesty, it can be detrimental to our mental health if we go through that for a prolonged period. Low self-esteem can originate from various reasons as well. While only a few factors impact some individuals, there are quite a several unfortunate souls who go through low self-esteem due to multiple reasons, and it all goes up to a point where they enter into a state of depression and even contemplate suicide. Low self-esteem can be caused due to multiple reasons, a few that include:


1. Physical or emotional abuse

2. Disapproval and invalidation from friends, family, colleagues, authority figures, etc.

3. Academic difficulties

4. Bullying in all forms

5. Emotionally distant parents

6. Dislike over one’s own physical appearance

7. Lack of good friends


Judging by the causes of low self-esteem above, it is imperative that we address them and find ways to battle this powerful and destructive emotion we possess. Otherwise, it will ruin our mental health and relationships with people around us. Some of the ways we can battle and overcome low self-esteem are listed under. These can be life-changing, given that we live in a progressive world, and with that, we too have to keep moving forward with the right mindset to keep getting better.


Practicing self-reflection

Practicing self-reflection is one of the best ways to help overcome low self-esteem. It is a self-improvement process you can go through. Look at yourself in the mirror every night before you go to bed and think about the good things that have happened today. Try to look into the future and see what lies ahead of you. The more you self-reflect, the better you will understand yourself and your potential.


Hit the Gym

Going to the gym is something you can do if you lack self-confidence or if you dislike your physical appearance. While it keeps you fit and healthy, it sure could improve your physique and facial structure. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to go to the gym for the sake of enhancing your looks because each of us is unique and attractive in our own ways, and physical appearance is not the only thing that should help you be confident.


Gain new skills

Practice new skills. This is a recommended method because you upskill yourself and enhance your abilities every time you learn something new. Considering the time we live in right now, gaining new skills is also important to keep up with the latest trends, and this will help immensely in improving your level of confidence and your caliber to do more.


Believe in yourself

Battling low self-esteem sometimes cannot be done all by yourself. You need the right people who are willing to stick by you no matter what and help you in times of crisis. Having a good circle of friends who understand you and make you feel better and positive will most definitely change your life and help you overcome low self-esteem.


Smile and embrace achievements

Celebrate your accomplishments. Both the big and small ones. Pat yourself on the back every time you achieve something. That will give you a sense of pride and self-recognition that even others wouldn’t show.


A very important thing to remember is that your self-esteem plays a major role in guiding you and helping you get through various hurdles in life. It matters a lot while pursuing goals and developing healthy relationships with others. Low self-esteem can make you susceptible to anxiety and depression. It is advisable to reduce this emotional burden. If you are facing low self-esteem, it is also advisable to go to a therapist. However, that is completely unnecessary and should be considered only if it goes up to a point where you cannot handle it and don’t have anyone around to help you get through it. Finally, to live a healthier and happier life, you must change your view of yourself and have confidence in your abilities.
