‘Anxiety’, is a feeling we all have had at least once. It could be for various reasons, waiting to hear if you have landed the job, waiting for the results to know if you can finally ask for that trip with your friends, or sometimes one can feel anxious without a particular reason.
What is anxiety?
Different people experience anxiety in different ways. Anxiety is nothing but the body’s response to stress. It is a feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness. There are various reasons causing anxiety and one must know what is the trigger point.
Not everyone experiences anxiety the same way. For a few of them, it might be an immediate response and quick burst of panic whereas for others the anxiety levels keep building up at a very slow rate and results in outburst. This is called an anxiety attack. It could occur due to a series of distress or fearful events.
What happens during an anxiety attack?
When a person experiences an anxiety attack, they begin to feel uncomfortable. It could be due to anything that is, a stressful event or thought. So how do you know if you are having an anxiety attack or not? A person who is having the attack feels very nervous, has an increased heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating, feeling of doom, feeling weak or tired, worried, not able to focus, and so on. These symptoms keep building up when the person does not acknowledge it and works to calm themselves. These symptoms are shown by the person from 5 to 20 minutes depending on the incident that has triggered the response.
Ways to overcome anxiety
Trigger identification- A lot is happening around us these days and it is hard and overwhelming to keep a track of everything. In such situations the first response our body has is anxiety. Take some time off, think about what you did the entire day and how it made you feel, identify how many times you felt anxious, and get to the root cause of it.
Workout- You must have heard people say that they feel great when they work out and are more productive on those days. Exercise or a physical workout can make you feel relaxed and stress-free. It will improve your health and keep you healthy. When you work out your body spends more energy. Make sure you substitute for what is lost from your body in the form of fruits and vegetables. No harm in trying it out.
Avoid habits that can cause anxiety- Habits such as smoking, drinking, and taking drugs can cause a lot of anxiety in people. These are responsible for worsening an anxiety attack.
Fix your sleep cycle- Your body and mind need rest. Make sure you have a proper sleeping pattern and get enough rest to fully function the next day.
Meet a counsellor- If you get anxiety attacks frequently and they start getting out of control, it is always better to consider going to a counsellor. A professional can help you identify your triggers and help you manage anxiety.
Hope these tips were helpful and helped you manage your anxiety better.
