The Restless Mind

Gautama Buddha was on a journey with his students. When Buddha became thirsty while walking on the road, he requested one of his students to fetch him some drinking water.

When the disciple looked about, he couldn't find any source of water. When they attempted again, he discovered a water source along the road.

He noticed that some people were washing their clothes in the water source. Then, out of nowhere, a bullock cart crossed over the source of the water. All of the water became foul and muddy as a result. Then he wondered how he could take that filthy, dirty water for Buddha.

So, empty-handed, he returned to Gautam Buddha. He told Buddha everything. Don't be concerned, Buddha said. We're all sitting in the shade of this large tree, relaxing.

After some time had passed, Gautama Buddha requested that the same disciple bring water once more. That disciple returned to the same stream of water. When he arrived, he discovered that the water was perfectly clean and drinkable. He now took the water and gave it to the Buddha. Gautam Buddha received that water from him.

Buddha explained to everyone how muck or dust spreads in water. However, all of his mud or dirt sank down after a while, and the water cleared.

Similarly, our minds work. Allow time for our brain to settle down when it is agitated. After a short period, our brain will likewise be peaceful.

With a restless mind, no decision should be made. All we have to do is keep our minds calm for a few moments to make effective decisions.
